Note: When you install, your U disk name must be named "WINPE", otherwise it will not be installed.
Will existing programs and configurations be saved during this installation?

How long does the reinstall take? I followed the steps but it seems to be on a loop at the automatic installation part.

Hello, I have a box z83-w, I tried to follow your guide, but when I insert the usb stick in the box and I press f7 on the keyboard the installation doesn't start. How should I do? I also tried with rufus with microsoft's iso but it doesn't start, the only installation that starts it's with iso windows 1709.

Dear Octan8787,

When you boot through F7, will you see the white circle spinning?

I followed the directions to the letter and it failed.

The reason it failed for me was due to the monitor/TV. No really.
After a few hours of fighting with this I grabbed a VGA monitor and the install went fine.
I ran into a similar Windows installation issue years ago that turned out to be the same problem.
Since the imaging process is outside of Windows it took me a while before I tried this old "trick".

The symptoms were:
Hit F7 and select USB drive to boot.
The access light on the thumb drives flashes, as its being read.
Minis Forum splash screen appears and hangs.
By hangs I mean a hard lock. The system will not respond to ctl-alt-del.

If you end up in this scenario try using a PC monitor instead of your TV.
I experienced this problem on both my Samsung and on an old Visio, both had the same results.

I have trouble with audio on linux, so I decided to reinstall windows and see if it works there (and thus to see if I have a hardware problem).

I downloaded the file as indicated and it fails.  The last bits look roughly like this (I am re-typing it):

****
Map drive letter for inside eMMC/SATA
****
Disk type: USB
Disk type: SD
Disk=1
Disk-type=SD
Using Disk "1"
*****
Map drive letter for USB Key
*****
2
Environment variable WinPESource not defined
Environment variable InstallPath not defined

"Not found *win(or *.swm) files in BaseOS or images\public\AMD64 folder"

I did it twice, making sure those files were where indicated (in the images you posted on google).

The USB key is DIsk 0 (not sure if the "2" above is relevant).

The (previously) linux partition is disk 1 as indicated, so that looks correct.

If I change directory to "C:\" at this point I can see the original files, they are readable, and under \images re both Install.wim and winre.wim, as expected.

If I go to x:\widows\system32 there is a wpeinit.log there, and it looks fine, ending with a bunch of "Status: Success" statements.

I checked for other drive letters and see nothing but X: and C: active, so it dies not appear to have assigned anything to the eMMc drive.

I ran Diskpart and Disk 1 looks right, I even pre-formatted it to match a windows layout, as well as leaving it "clean" and didn't make any difference.  The issue seems to be related to finding the USB Key, though it shows up as Disk 0 just fine.

Any ideas?

Ah... come on. Your instructions did not mention that the volume name on the USB Key must be exactly "winpe". There's an explicit check for that name when assigning the drive letters in the script. I went through the script and found that, renamed, rebooted and this time it applied the image. Worse your documentation explicitly shows a different name (ESD_USB) which I used. Though now it seems to be hung booting. I need to continue later, but wanted to post this note for anyone else trying.

OK, after making the above change, everything installed just fine.  The initial reboot takes a LONG time, so do not rush to retry/restart, just watch the spinning circle.  After coming back and rebooting a couple times and going through the windows setup, it all looked perfect, and my audio works proving the hardware is fine and functional, so now back to linux.

Anyway, if reading this, when you make the USB key, use "winpe" and not some other default name or the one shown in the documentation and it should work fine.

This applies to our company's Z83 series of products, and others may have some minor flaws.
